The Reason

When asked why he continues making music, Kim Seong-guk, leader of the nu-metal band Modern Family, gives a simple answer: “Because it’s fun.” Expecting a deeper artistic purpose, director Kim Yeon-hye is puzzled by his response. As the band prepares for performances, including a show in Hong Kong, The Reason asks: Can art truly be sustained by enjoyment alone? 

The director has long believed that art is sustained by passion, conviction, and purpose. Yet Kim Seong-guk, leader of Modern Family, gives a simple answer when asked why he continues making music: “Because it’s fun.” Through the contrast between these two perspectives, *The Reason* questions whether art must be defined by grand ideals, or if enjoyment alone can be enough.
