PROGRAM

Reinhold Messner was the first person in the world to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen, and he was also the first person to complete all 14 giants. He authorized over 80 mountaineering books, sharing his profound mountaineering experience with people around the world. Needless to say, he is a living legend, having dedicated his whole life to exploring and preaching the fundamentals of alpinism through numerous lectures and various cultural projects.

Messner's influence on the Korean mountaineering community has also been significant. Following Messner¡¯s achievements from the beginning, Korean alpinists began a passionate pursuit of completing all 14 giants in the late 1990s. Consequently, some even embarked on the adventure of climbing the giants without supplementary oxygen. Several of his books have been translated into Korean, as well. Resonating with his climbing philosophy, many young people have embarked on the arduous journey of climbing the high mountains and steep walls.

Although somewhat belated, Messner has been selected as the recipient of the 10th Ulsan Ulju Mountain Culture Award. To commemorate this, the Glocal Alpinism Forum, themed ¡°Reinhold Messner and Korean Alpinists,¡± will study the influence and legacy of Messner's climbing and writings on Korean alpinists. The event is co-held by the Corean Alpine Club(CAC), the Korea Alpine Federation(KAF), the Korea Mountaineering Research Institute, the Busan Mountain Forum, and the Korea Society of Mountain Research.

Following Messner¡¯ opening remarks, who is scheduled to visit the event, presenters KAP SOO CHUNG, Albert Lee, and Kim DaeHyun will delve into Messner's impact on the Korean mountaineering community, focusing on the past, present, and future each. And there will be a discussion by Nam Sun Woo, OH EUNSUN, and Park Myong Hwan, finally followed by a general discussion.
