The UMCA exhibition is to honor and widely share the achievements and spirit of Reinhold Messner(1944-), who is recognized as ¡°one of the greatest mountaineers¡± in history. The exhibition is to introduce Messner¡¯s life as an alpinist and adventurer who has overcome extreme challenges beyond human limits, such as the first ascent of Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen, the first ascents of all 14 eight-thousanders without supplementary oxygen, the first cross of Antarctica and Greenland without snowmobiles nor dog sleds. He valued taking on new challenges in his own way rather than climbing itself, and maintained the traditional alpine-style. Messner is also an author who has written more than 80 books about his vivid experiences and mountain culture, and the exhibition presents various books translated and published into Korean. It also introduces ¡°Reinhold Messner Stiftung ¡°, ¡°Messner Mountain Museums(MMM)¡± and ¡°Reinhold Messner Horizonte¡±, which were established and are being operated based on his philosophy and vision. His deep insight into humanity and nature learned by surviving extreme circumstances will truly resonate with many people living in the chaotic times of critical climate change and political conflict.
