PROGRAM

Every year, the Sooyoung Chin Cinema Ensemble presents a creative interpretation of silent films to the UMFF audience. This year, they will perform to Go West by Buster Keaton, a legendary figure in silent film history.
The heartwarming coming-of-age tale of the clumsy and lonely Friendless is brought to life with the delightful music of the Sooyoung Chin Cinema Ensemble.

Buster burlesques the Western in this comedy about a friendless drifter who befriends a cow named Brown Eyes and accompanies her on the cattle train to the stockyards. When rustlers attack, he saves her, and the two of them ride off into the sunset in the back of a motor car!

Sooyoung Chin

Sooyoung Chin is a jazz pianist and songwriter, who majored in piano at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, and obtained a master¡¯s degree in composition from Queens College.

Simultaneously released in the US and Korea, his debut album Original Intension (with bassist Choi Kwang-moon and drummer Kim Chaek), was awarded by the ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers), the largest music copyright management organization in the US.

He has also released two solo piano albums, 'Night, Water Light' and 'Paraphrase', and most recently presented 'everland', a collaborative project with singer-songwriter Hong Isaac.​ 

Sumin Jung

Sumin Jung is a jazz bassist highly acclaimed as a musician. Jung appeared in EBS¡¯s Space Identity New Face of Korean Jazz, Jazz People¡¯s 20 Best Jazz Albums, Best Albums of 2021, and was nominated in the jazz album category at the Korean Popular Music Awards. 

Jung is an artist who expresses inner beauty through music, embracing reality, and sharing that beauty with a diverse audience.

He made his debut with the album "Neoliberalism", followed by three full-length albums: Tonggam (2nd), Lament (3rd), and Self-reflection (4th).​ 

Brian Shin
Brian Shin is a trumpeter and composer with a master¡¯s degree in Practical Music from Dongduk Women¡¯s University Graduate School. Rooted in jazz, he explores a wide range of genres to create a uniquely original musical world.
He performed at the 2021 Daejeon Jazz Festival with Brian Shin & the Swing Makers, released Vol. 2 in 2023, and released his solo album Sad Rain in 2025.
In 2024, he also joined Baek Hyun-jin¡¯s Seoul Manner project, taking the stage at London¡¯s Coronet Theatre, and continues to perform actively both in Korea and abroad.​
