This year¡¯s Human section focuses on the stories of people living in a changing society with tradition and the present intermingling. The section introduces feature films about the impact of rapid shifts in technology and civilization to the modern society, as well as those with themes about ¡°Korea and Family¡± where tradition and present coexist.
Charlie Chaplin¡¯s Modern Times, a sad comedy about the industrial society, will be accompanied by a live performance by the Sooyoung Chin Cinema Ensemble. In Perfect Days, cassette tapes, and a film camera are the protagonist¡¯s partner in his perfect day. Reflecting on the impact of a rapidly changing society, Suyeong Bakery is a story about gentrification, of people trying to fight change, and Agent of Happiness is a story about the lives and happiness levels of the Bhutanese people as observed by Bhutan¡¯s happiness surveyors.
There are also films that make us reflect on the meaning of family and the changing familial bonds: House of the Seasons, which portrays the history and changes in Korea through the members of a traditional extended family; When This Summer is Over, set against the backdrop of Ulju Eonyang and Samnam, intricately combines a mother¡¯s desire with a boy¡¯s coming of age story; Picnic, which raises various issues of family and society through the acting harmony of Na Moon-hee, Kim Yeong-ok, and Park Keun-hyong; and Our Season (with sign language interpretation), a fantasy-like meeting and parting of a mother and daughter.
